Social Networking Adoption

February 19, 2009

For those of you that missed my Tweet about this from this morning, here is a good link to some recent data about social networking usage by demographic:

PEW Research Observes:

  • 75% of online adults 18-24 have a profile on a social network site
  • 57% of online adults 25-34 have a profile on a social network
  • 30% of online adults 35-44 have one
  • 19% of online 45 to 54 year olds have a profile
  • 10% of online 55 to 64 year olds have a profile
  • 7% of online adults 65 and older have a profile

While the stats are still not be huge for the over 54 set, I’m surprised by the use in earlier demographics.  Consider that these technologies are less than 4 years old!  Also think about the future.  As the older demographic retires and even more socially savvy workers enter the workforce, these percentages will keep rising.  Couple that with the rapid rate of adoption among all demographics, and it’s pretty clear that in just a few years, the 45-54 yr old numbers will be a lot closer to the current 25-34 yr old numbers.

All of this furthers the argument that in a time of economic turbulence, companies should be rethinking, reinventing, and shaking up old paradigms to better adapt to a rapidly  changed social landscape.
